Advertising information / Appropriation / Political crafts

The project was born thanks to the following question: What’s the role of an artist? for “Uno más uno, multitud”, an exhibition commissioned by Tania Pardo (Doméstico 08).

The work was about collecting flyers delivered on the street, two of the same kind, and weaving them together, in such a way that its information was no longer legible. Its message was re-codified as a kind of “deactivation” of the advertising strategy, through and an aesthetic action. I created the term “political craft” as a handmade work made with any crafts technic, that doesn’t need to have a practical function (e.g.: a shoe or a bowl), but aims to have a “reflective function“ through action, which lead us to reflect about our own socio-political environment.

I lead a “political craft” workshop that took place in the independent art festival “El Globo de Juan”, in June 2009, in Braga, Portugal, in which we weaved Portuguese advertisement papers.
